Johannesburg, South Africa – June 2013

The power of Ubuntu - “Today I felt connected not just to one person but a whole community. All these people make a puzzle that will never fall apart.”

 

Physical Service

PARTNERSHIP: Dowling Primary School, Johannesburg, South Africa
Outdoor Space rehab – transformed outdoor play spaces to colorful – energetic space - painted fences, sports courts, created playground murals.

PARTNERSHIP: Kliptown Youth Programs, Johannesburg, South Africa
Home repairs – rebuilt fire damaged homes with new roofs and painted home exteriors for 6 families in Soweto.

PARTNERSHIP: Positive Cycle – Entokozweni Community Center, Johannesburg, South Africa
Outdoor Space rehab – refurbished and planted sustainable vegetable gardens, built mirror scarecrows, rehabbed windows for community center.

 

Human Service

PARTNERSHIP: Phutaditjaba – Alexandra Township, Johannesburg, South Africa
Alexandra Field Marching Band – Witnessed the power of music to transform the lives of young people – concert performed by the Alex Field Band and musical exchange with Chad and Ripples families sharing a few songs along the way.

PARTNERSHIP: Nkosi’s Haven, Johannesburg, South Africa
Youth Games and Activities – Created a series of workshops for residents of Nkosi’s Haven including storytelling, magic tricks, folk-dancing, face painting, tie-dye shirts and soccer.

PARTNERSHIP: Kliptown Youth Programs, Johannesburg, South Africa
Community Celebration – barbecue with games, activities for kids and families, musical and Spoken word cultural exchange.


Cape Town, South Africa – June 2013

 

Physical Service

PARTNERSHIP: Uthando and GreenPop, Cape Town, South Africa
Worked side by side with children and GreenPop organization to plant 50 new trees at the Isikhokelo Primary School in Khayelistha Township.

PARTNERSHIP: Amy Biehl Foundation, Cape Town, South Africa
Beautified outdoor play space with Mandela mural designed by one our Ripples family members.

Arts and crafts workshops, games and activities to engage the young children at two community centers

Home and After School Space renovations – repaired roofs, painted homes, painted classrooms.

PARTNERSHIP: Metro Evangelical Services, Johannesburg, South Africa
Indoor Space rehab – painted classrooms and created new wall murals.

Human Service

PARTNERSHIP: Kliptown Youth Programs, Johannesburg, South Africa
Community Celebration – barbecue with games and activities for kids and families.

Photo project – Photo journalism workshop for Kliptown Youth Program teens to share "What They Are Most Proud Of In Kliptown".

 

PARTNERSHIP: Nkosi’s Haven, Johannesburg, South Africa
Youth Games and Activities – Created a series of workshops for residents of Nkosi’s Haven including yoga, storytelling, duct tape bracelets, face painting, tie-dye shirts and basketball.

Evening Meal – Broke bread together at Community Supper with traditional apple and pumpkin pies prepared by Ripples of Hope families and traditional South African dishes prepared by Nkosi’s staff.


 

Cape Town, South Africa – June 2011

Classroom renovations –painted classrooms, built bookshelves.

PARTNERSHIP: Grassroots Soccer, Cape Town, South Africa
Library Renovation – Built bookshelves and benches.

Human Service

PARTNERSHIP: Kuyasa Youth Services, Cape Town, South Africa
Reading Workshops – Storytelling with songs, games and activities to engage the young children.

PARTNERSHIP: Grassroots Soccer, Cape Town, South Africa
Aids Workshop and Soccer Tournament – Participated in Aids Information program then later joined the soccer teams to participate in the local soccer tournament.

Although the days were long and sometimes exhausting, when we asked our families "What was the Most Challenging Part of the Day", the overwhelming response was, "Having to say good-bye and leaving our great new friends!"
